Everything between here and black belt

Bassai, Naihanji, and the complete Cho Dan testing process

Red belt is where the curriculum shifts from forms practice to black belt preparation. You'll learn Bassai and Naihanji Cho Dan — two of the classical forms shared across the Korean and Okinawan karate family — alongside Chil Sung E Ro, advanced one-step sparring, and a full review of self-defense (Ho Sin Sul) technique.

The second half of the course is the Dan testing process itself: eligibility requirements, what to prepare six months out and one month out, written test preparation, and the official written test content. Nothing about Cho Dan testing is left as a surprise.

Dan-level rank testing still requires an in-person evaluation through the Federation — this course prepares you completely for that evaluation, but doesn't replace it.

Test for rank when you're ready

Rank evaluation is optional and sold separately. The curriculum stands on its own — plenty of students train it purely as reference, or to sharpen what they already practice elsewhere.

If you do want certified rank, every section of this course includes the full testing requirements for that level, the video submission standards, and a demonstration example. You'll receive a detailed evaluation from Brian Corrales, Sa Bom, with certification issued through Wasatch Martial Arts Academy under the World Moo Duk Kwan.

Learn about certification

What an evaluation involves

  1. Train consistently. Around two hours a week for three to four months at your current rank.
  2. Record your video. In uniform, full body in frame, with room to move freely.
  3. Demonstrate the basics. Blocks and strikes on both sides, kicks from both angles, following the format given in your rank section.
  4. Announce and perform your form. Name it, then run it, exactly as shown in the example video.
  5. Submit and receive feedback. A detailed evaluation of your performance, with certification on passing.

Certified rank requires membership in the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation or your country's World Moo Duk Kwan affiliate. No membership is needed to take the course. One-steps, wrist grabs and breaking require a partner.

Questions

Do I need the Green Belt course before starting Red Belt? ▼
If you're continuing up through the ranks, yes — this course assumes you already know the four Pyung Ahn forms and green belt basics. If you already hold 3rd gup or higher through another school or organization, you can start here directly.
What forms do you learn in the Red Belt course? ▼
Bassai and Naihanji Cho Dan — two classical forms shared across the Korean and Okinawan karate family — plus Chil Sung E Ro. All three are taught in full with breakdown lessons, alongside advanced one-step sparring and a complete self-defense (Ho Sin Sul) review.
Does completing this course mean I'm certified Cho Dan? ▼
No. This course fully prepares you for Cho Dan testing — forms, sparring, the written test — but the actual Dan evaluation is an in-person test through the Federation. Color belt rank up through 1st gup can still be certified by video through Digital Dojang.
I already hold a black belt or Dan rank in another organization. Is this course for me? ▼
Yes. Many students at this stage are cross-training or working toward certification under the World Moo Duk Kwan specifically. The forms and testing standards here follow World Moo Duk Kwan requirements, so it's a direct way to see exactly what's expected.
How long does it take to prepare for a Cho Dan (black belt) test? ▼
Most students spend close to a year across the three red belt sub-ranks before they're eligible for Cho Dan testing, training a couple of hours a week. The course itself is self-paced with lifetime access.
What equipment do I need for the Red Belt course? ▼
A uniform, enough space to move, and a partner for one-steps, wrist grabs, and the self-defense review. Everything else you can train alone.
Do I get lifetime access to the Red Belt course? ▼
Yes. This is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it includes any updates made to the course, indefinitely.
